weekend post for may 9th

"Happy Mother's Day" means more
Than have a happy day.
Within those words lie lots of things
We never get to say.
It means I love you first of all,
Then thanks for all you do.
It means you mean a lot to me,
And that I honor you.
But most of all, I guess it means
That I am thinking of
Your happiness on this, your day,
With pleasure and with love.

Ramadan
Ramadan( often spelled differently ) is the ninth month of the Islamic calender. During Ramadan, Muslim people fast. While they fast they are not supposed to eat/drink anything, smoke, or have any sexual intercourse with someone. When you participate in Ramadan you wake up at dawn and don't eat until sunset. Ramadan is meant to teach Muslim people about patience and modesty. It is the time for Muslim people to pray more than they usually do. When they pray, they ask god to forgive them for their past sins. Ramadan is a moving holiday because each year its on a different day. Once Ramadan is completed, Eid-ul-fitr is celebrated on the first day of the tenth Islamic month (Shaw'waal ). This day is sort of like Thanks Giving to Muslim people.

Weekend Post____Customs in France-march 26th

France has many customs. One of the customs that France has is shaking hands with someone that you're meeting for the first time. If someone is your friend, you greet them by giving them a light kiss on the cheeks, one on the left cheek and the other one on the right cheek. Another custom is that you only say someone's first name if you are part of their family or if you are a close friend. You can start saying someone's first name if they have invited you somewhere. In France, when you enter a store or somewhere else you're expected to say bonjour/ bonsoir to the Monsieur/ Madame. If you're at a dinner party, you have to wait til the host/ hostess says bon appetit before you start eating. France has too many other customs for me to talk about, but to see them you can visit France's customs.

Teacher possibly killed by Wolves

A 32 year old woman named Candace Berner was killed while jogging along a rural road in Alaska Village road. Candace was a special ed teacher from Pennsylvania who began working in Alaska in August. The Alaska State Medical  Examiner stated that Candace had multiple injuries due to animal mauling. An autopsy was performed on Candace which couldn't reveal exactly what animal killed Candace. Through DNA Analysis, it can be proven that wolves were indeed the cause of Candace's death. Even though there are other carnivores in Alaska, wolves are the chief suspect of the death of Candace.

Weekend Post

On March 6th in Gary, Indiana there was a shooting at a concert. This concert was a Woka Flocka Flame concert. 8 teenage boys, 14-18 years old, were shot but none of them got fatal wounds. Some of the boys were shot in the stomach, legs, wrist, and back. None of the boys knew what started the shooting. But the Boombox reported that the shooting may have been caused by a hype man who started talking about the east side versus the west side. A teen who was at the concert said that the shooter was a black man with a red hat on and dread locks. As for Waka Flocka  this is the third time that he's been involved in gunfire. One time was when he got into a shoot out with Young Jeezy's entourage. Another time was when Waka Flocka got shot twice during a robbery attempt in January.

Earthquake in Chile

On Saturday, February 27th 2010, an earthquake erupted in Chile. The earthquake had an 8.8 magnitude and had 76 aftershocks of a 4.9 magnitude. Chile is located in South America and is a Spanish-speaking country. The earthquake occurred in Chile's second largest city called Concepcion. So far, this earthquake has killed more than 700 people. It has destroyed or damaged more than one million homes. Chile's earthquake is one of the most powerful earthquakes in the century. More than 2 million people were affected by the quake. The Chilean president, Michelle Bachelet, has asked for international aid. I wasn't really surprised that the earthquake had occurred because I read that Coastal Chile has a history of deadly earthquakes in which 13 of the earthquakes had a magnitude of 7.0 or higher.A comparison of the Chile earthquake to the Haiti earthquake shows that Chile's earthquake was far more stronger than Haiti's. Chile was more wealthier and better prepared than Haiti. Haiti had weak buildings but Chile didn't.

The New NAACP Chairwoman

A woman named Roslyn Brock was announced the new chairwoman for the NAACP.She first started working with the NAACP when she was a freshman at the Virginia Union University. She also earned a masters degree in the health service administration from George Washington University. For more info on Roslyn you can go to All about Roslyn M Brock. Roslyn Brock is a health care executive and a former NAACP vice chair. she was chosen to fill in the seat left by Julian Bond. Roslyn is 44 years old and is the youngest person to have ever served in this position. I think that its wonderful for the NAACP to have chosen a young woman like Brock. Brock has said that the NAACP's goal is to encourage all Americans to join the organization. Another goal that Roslyn wants to achieve is to ensure that the policies, programs and politics of the NAACP are relevant to a new generation so that young people can get involved.

IS KEVIN SMITH THAT FAT???

Recently, Kevin Smith was kicked off a Southwest Air flight because he didn't fit properly into the one seat that was left. Because of his weight, Kevin Smith usually buys two seats when he takes an airplane but there was only one seat left. Obviously Kevin was humiliated because shortly after the incident he tweeted angrily about it. He said that Captain Leysath( the man who told him had to get off the plane) wasn't justified for throwing him off a flight for which he had already payed for. The Sothwest Airlines said that their reasoning for telling Smith to get off the plane was because of safety issues and for passengers to be comfortable. The airlines' weight capacity is about 170 pounds and Smith weights more than that. The Airline did  give a public apology to Smith. There is more  information on the Kevin Smith Incident. I don't think that Kevin Smith should've been kicked off the airplane. To avoid this embarrassment  they could've told Smith to wait for the next flight.

February is known as black history month because many events such as the passage of the fifteenth amendment, the death of Malcolm X, and the birth of W.E.B Dubois( co-founder of the NAACP). It was first called Negro History Week by Carter and then changed to black history month. Black history is celebrated in February in the United States, Canada, and in October in the United Kingdom. It is basically the remembrance of important African Americans and events in the history of African diaspora.
